When their cherished book club becomes the focus of a documentary film, six friends find that the camera’s gaze forces them to read between the lines of their own relationships.
And also forces them to read Twilight.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Ana Smith (30s) (pronounced “Ah-nuh”): Beautiful. Charming. Smart. Accomplished. Organized. A columnist for a daily paper. The “Mother Bee.” Her grace masks a need to control.
Robert Novum Smith, Jr. (30s): Ana’s golden-boy handsome, charismatic, underachiever husband, who is starting to search for meaning. They met in college. Upper-crust background.
William Lee Nothnagel (30s): Rob’s small-c conservative, well-read, well-dressed, disciplined college roommate. Ana’s former boyfriend. History buff. Unmarried.
Jennifer McClintock (30s): Ana’s friend. Pretty. Shy. Smart. Tends to burst out with awkward, truthful comments. Despite some lack of self-confidence, she is the grounding center of the group. Unorganized and oblivious to her own attractiveness. Unmarried.
Lily Louise Jackson (black, 20s): a go-getter. A former debate captain who is on the cusp of all current trends and yet can still put her foot in her mouth on social occasions. Laughs at both appropriate and inappropriate times. A great lover of books and Ana’s protégée at the paper.
Alex (30s): the new guy. A smart, well-read academic who has lost his moorings and is searching for real connection. A professor of comparative literature.
the Pundit (any gender, 20s-60s). Plays five characters: Sam, the Wal-Mart guy; Frank, the Secret Service agent; Mrs. Simpson, the skydiver; Elsa, the jaded literary agent; and Carl, the inmate book dealer.
A hint: this is not a farce, but a play about real people. The funny should come from the humanity of the characters.
